A NEW book of stories from authors linked to the University of Hull will be launched next week.
End Notes – a collection of 10 interlinked stories about loss, mourning and commemoration – is edited by Ray French and Kath McKay as part of the university’s “Crossing Over” project.
The e-book will be launched at Room TR3 of the Brynmor Jones Library on Thursday, May 11 from 6.30-8.30. It will be available as a free download.
It is an Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded project and will be available as a free download.
The launch will also commemorate the life of poet and lecturer Dr David Kennedy, who died in March. He was the driving force behind the venture on campus.
One of the book’s editors, novelist and teacher Ray French said: “David was a much-loved and respected member of the English Department and the Crossing Over Network.
“This evening will commemorate his life and work as well as mark the launch of this exciting, important collection of stories by leading writers linked to the University.”
The event will include brief readings from some of those writers. There will also be a question-and-answer session.
Fittingly, this Culture Café event will be held during Dying Matters National Awareness Week – 8- 14 May 2017.
The writers who contributed to End Notes are: Sue Chard, Mandy Sutter, Brian W. Lavery, Ray French, Moy McCrory, Kath McKay, Steve Dearden, David Wheatley and Tiina Hautala.

End Notes is a collection of 10 interlinked stories about loss, mourning and commemoration, both traditional and non-traditional. It spans a range of cultural practices, illuminating that which connects us. An English girl uses a Nigerian ritual to mourn her beloved grandmother; journalists in pursuit of a story carry out ‘the death knock’; siblings discover hidden aspects of their father’s life when they attend his two very different funerals; a Spanish woman encounters unexpected tenderness and grace in a London hospice; a collector goes in search of ghost stories at a haunted Finnish manor; 1988, 2016, 2017 – what was wrong with those years? – a writer explores how people die, as they do every year; a man invites mourners to express their grief in whatever way they wish in a public park, and gets more than he bargains for.
End Notes is edited by Ray French and Kath McKay from the Creative Writing Team in English at the School of Arts, University of Hull.
